Muscle twitching refers to the tightening of muscles which is involuntary. Muscle twitching can happen with any muscle in the body but mostly the eyelids and the lower calf muscles. These muscle twitches can be very painful and completely involuntarily. They often appear at night and can really alarm the sufferer.

Most of the time muscle twitching is not something serious and can be controlled with minor lifestyle changes. In this article, we are giving you three tips on dealing with muscle twitching.

1. Hydration

One of the main reasons of muscle cramps or twitches is dehydration. On a regular basis, the humans start to feel thirsty when their blood has started to thicken already because of dehydration. It is thus important to drink water frequently even if you are not feeling thirsty.

People who workout frequently such as athletes can also muscle twitches because they sweat a lot and do not drink enough water. It has nothing to do with physical fitness. A good way to keep an eye on your hydration level is to drink enough water such that your urine stays clear or nearly clear.

2. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is also very important for bone and muscle strength. If you live in an area where sunlight is very low or you spend more time indoors during the day, it is highly likely that you will be suffering from a deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency causes stiffness in bones which can lead to muscle spasms.

It is thus important to rely on sources of vitamin D other than the sunlight. Some foods which are rich in vitamin D include fatty fish, beef, cheese and egg yolks. If you are suffering from muscle twitches and spasms, then you should include these food items in your food.

3. Stress

Physical as well as mental stress can also trigger muscle twitches. Stress leads to release of the cortisol hormone. Large amounts of cortisol in the body triggers the magnesium stores to deplete.

As a result, nerve function is impacted and your muscles start twitching. If you work in high stress environments, do not be alarmed when you get muscle spasms. Reducing stress and magnesium supplements can help you get rid of muscle twitches caused by stress.

Muscle twitches usually go away in a matter of days. If you or a loved one is experiencing a muscle twitch which is getting worse everyday, then you should consult a neurologist at your earliest.
